Bald Eagle Tracking Project - Week 1

After the first week since being released at Sandy Point State Park on May 27, the immature eagles have moved in different directions. Blue moved from Sandy Point and went north to spend the week in the Aberdeen Proving Ground area at the head of the Chesapeake Bay. This is one of Maryland’s major concentration areas for non-breeding bald eagles. Red also spent some time at Aberdeen Proving Ground, after initially spending a few days in the Severn River area.

Red is now in southern New Jersey. This is the longest distance any of the immature eagles have traveled thus far. Green spent most of the week on the south shore of the Severn River and then moved to the bay shoreline of Calvert County exactly one week after its release at Sandy Point. Yellow is the only one that stayed at Sandy Point for the first day. She then moved to the South River in Anne Arundel County for another day or two. Yellow then moved east to Kent Island on May 31 and was along the east fork of the Wye River on the Eastern Shore by the end of the first week. The preceeding text was provided by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. To return to the DNR's Eagle Watch site, please click here.
